Hair we go-2 Year Natural Hair Anniversary!

Writer: Marquita BiancaMarquita Bianca

I’m Two years into the journey of becoming a person who couldn’t love herself more.  I say two years because I officially made the decision to embrace my natural hair around this time two years ago.  I use the word embrace intentionally.  I’ve been honest throughout the blogs I’ve written that my perspective at first was cautiously optimistic.  Year 1 in my natural hair was a whirlwind. I started dating my husband, met his family, got engaged, and I attended Fashion week all within year 1.  While the world would consider all of these fun events my soul considers them to be growth spurts. Some parts were really difficult for me. Everything changed, from my journey of what a wash day looked like to how I felt in my clothes.

Fast forward, two years later I’m married and through inner work see 90% of the world differently.

Let’s chat my 2 year Anniversary tips and what I’ve learned:

- Be a friend and not faux- Your hair was designed to be the most authentic part of you. It lives and breathes daily. The best place to start a journey is by being your hair's best friend. She wants to be yours and while that may not look/feel like you think it should-its true. Thinking of your hair as a great friend leads you to move a certain way. You speak to your friends a certain way, you enjoy them and would do anything for them. When I learned this my hair started to thrive.

-Products: Expensive doesn’t mean best- I’ve tried many products for my hair and what I always settle on that I see working best isn’t always the highest end on the market. I discovered my lifestyle is really what determined this. In the summer I’m a mermaid and always in the water therefore I now base my products around that need. In the fall/winter while there are dry days I live in a place where it is still fairly humid year round. Since I've opted to not straighten my hair my products are heavy on moisture and curl support.

-Embodiment: There are many conversations about personal style and your main character's energy.   I determined in year two that my style doesn’t have to fit in one category but I do have  ideals that make me feel consistently good, put together and beautiful.

I shape my hair for what works for me and not what trends I see. Year 1 MB was desperately looking for a curl with length. Year two I love my natural curly bob, sometimes mini-fro.

Wherever you are on your journey I hope you are finding all the beautiful ways to enjoy it.
